Zinc plating
Zinc plating is one of the most commonly used electroplating processes for the corrosion protection of iron parts. Since zinc is a very base metal, it is oxidized by the iron and thereby acts as a sacrificial anode. Even when the surface is damaged—such as by scratches—rust formation is prevented. For this reason, electrogalvanizing is used in the construction industry, the marine sector, mechanical engineering, and the defense industry.
There are a wide variety of processes; the weakly acidic zinc used has excellent coverage and is also suitable for heat-treated steels and cast iron workpieces. Zinc coatings can be passivated or chromated after application, which significantly enhances their protective effect.
